The Embraer E190-E2 was the first member of the E2 family to fly, in May 2016, and the first to enter service, with Norway's Widerøe in April 2018. It keeps the first-generation Embraer E190's four-abreast cabin but replaces nearly everything else: a new high-aspect-ratio wing, Pratt & Whitney PW1919G geared turbofans with a 73-inch fan, and closed-loop fly-by-wire. At certification Embraer reported a 17.3% improvement in fuel burn per seat over the Embraer E190 - better than the programme's original target.
Its range is the surprise. Embraer quotes 2,950 nm with a full cabin - within 50 nm of the much larger Embraer E195-E2, because both carry the same 13,690 kg of usable fuel. In July 2020 Helvetic Airways flew a new E190-E2 nonstop from Natal, Brazil to Zurich: roughly 4,050 nm in 9 hours 10 minutes, a record-length delivery flight the airline stressed was flown in optimum conditions that bear no comparison to passenger operations. In scheduled service Widerøe has pushed the type to Bergen-Lanzarote, a sector of more than five hours.
Commercially the E190-E2 has been the quiet middle child of the family. About 30 are in service against more than 160 Embraer E195-E2s: many airlines that need a 100-seat jet have kept flying paid-off first-generation Embraer E190s, while growing carriers have stepped up to the larger E195-E2. Its weight also rules it out of US regional scope clauses, which cap regional jets at 76 seats and 86,000 lb MTOW. The operators that did choose it - Widerøe, Helvetic Airways flying for SWISS, Scoot in Singapore, Royal Jordanian and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines - use it where a 94- to 114-seat cabin fits the market better than a 130-seat one.
